An Ode to No Mow May
In full transparency, I don’t actually have a lawn… BUT I do have a small garden patch that I would classify as wild.
It is in full rebirth. Tiny buds, burgeoning green tendrils from the earth, and a few fully fledged daffodils that are heralding the warmer weather.
But, if you have a lawn, I would like to take a moment and encourage you to let it grow wild.
This idea is part of a movement called No Mow May - a simple but powerful action where you pause mowing for the month of May to help pollinators.
By letting your lawn grow naturally, you give plants like dandelions, clover, and violets a chance to bloom which provide essential food for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators coming out of winter.
Pollinators are responsible for nearly 80% of all flowering plants, including more than 130 types of fruits and vegetables. Without them, ecosystems unravel and our food systems will suffer. By doing a little less this spring, you can create a much-needed lifeline for our small friends.
And after all, what’s better than sustainability aligning with doing less!? Lazy girl sustainability? Sign me up.
If you're looking for more ways to help pollinators, here are a few simple ideas:
Plant a pollinator garden (using native plants whenever possible)
Avoid pesticides, herbicides, and chemical fertilizers
Support local beekeepers
Donate to nonprofits like The Bee Conservancy
Choose food grown through regenerative and organic methods
